How to Buy Jewelry Repair Tools

Jewelry often needs repair or minor adjustments. Instead of running to a jewelry shop or department store, it's more convenient to have your own set of tools on hand. Simply follow these instructions to buy your own jewelry repair tools.

Step 1
Choose your tools carefully. Higher quality tools will be easier to use, last longer and perform better. However, they'll also cost more money.
Step 2
Make a list of the tools you intend to purchase. Buy a mandrel and a variety of brushes, buffs and polishing wheels to accommodate various types of metals and stones. Additional jewelry repair tools you may want include a basic set of files, a soldering machine and soldering supplies, various clamps, needle-nosed pliers, a vice, cleaning racks and cleaning solution.
Step 3
Purchase a pair of stone-setting tweezers. Long and extremely sharp, these tweezers are excellent for handling stones, but you may need some practice before you're able to use them easily.
Step 4
When buying glue for securing stones, only buy professional grade glue that is specifically designed for jewelry, such as a 2-part epoxy. Otherwise, you risk damaging the stone or ending up with a stone that isn't securely set.
Step 5
Remember to get a loupe, which is a handheld magnification device that you'll use to inspect jewelry and identify areas in need of repair. You'll need a loupe that is at least 17mm with 10X magnification.
Step 6
Talk to your local jeweler. Ask them where they purchase their repair tools and see if they recommend any particular brand of products.
Step 7
Make sure you have an adequate work area in which to use your jewelry repair tools. You'll need a workbench or table of some sort, as well as a comfortable stool or chair. Good lighting is invaluable, so be sure to have a bright lamp nearby.
