Gold filled" is made by fusing a layer of karat gold to a base metal, often brass creating a permanent bond. The layer of gold on gold filled jewelry is much thicker than the layer of gold used to create gold plated jewelry. Since the gold completely covers the outer surface of the metal, it is very difficult to tell the difference between gold and gold filled products simply by looking at it. Yet the cost of producing gold filled jewelry will be substantially less than making gold jewelry in a similar style. This article will explain how to care for your gold filled jewelry-- whether you made it yourself, bought it from a talented artisan or received a lovely gift to be cherished for years.
Step 1
Gold filled jewelry should be cleaned frequently. Salt water, chlorine in swimming pools, soap and perspiration will all take their toll on all gold filled jewelry. Be sure to wipe your jewelry carefully with a soft cloth regularly to keep it clean of these elements which oxidizes.
Step 2
The best way to clean gold filled jewelry is to use a polishing cloth.
Step 3
If a polishing cloth will not reach the crevices in your jewelry, take a small bowl that will hold about a quart of water and line it with aluminum foil. Add hot water and a tablespoon of Tide washing powder and stir. Be sure to use the powdered detergent and not liquid detergent or detergent with bleach. Place your gold filled jewelry in the solution for about 1 minute or until it looks clean.
Step 4
Once your gold filled jewelry is clean, rinse with the solution off with clean water. Air dry.
